We do not parent with an earthly world view, but rather we try to keep in mind the eternal. Being in this world but pointing our kids to live contrary to it is a daily battle for their hearts and minds. They are confronted at every side. Our ideals are being attacked. Our convictions are taunted and the world calls evil good. This is why we keep on, why we do the hard work and talk about the hard things. If we don’t, we lose. And our kids could pay- with their lives, their health, their mind, their faith-the cost of giving up is too high.
This reality can be wearisome. But to do nothing is to lose. To say nothing is to comply. And to not teach these things to our kids is to leave room for their hearts and minds to be taken. I refuse! I would never allow this in the physical sense-never. So we must not allow this in the mental, spiritual, or emotional sense. We are parents from their birth, and our influence on their upbringing is our responsibility and priority.
In the home, We are their first teachers, their first coaches, their first authority and protection. If we aren’t doing our job as their parents, the world wants to fill those positions and are,in fact, fighting to.
We MUST be warriors! We MUST arm ourselves and know our enemy and prepare for the battle. We MUST anticipate any questions and be prepared with honesty, truth, and grace.
We also must listen. Listen to the arguments the world is spouting at our kids in the class, on social media, in the library, online. We should cautiously discuss the arguments our kids face. We need to listen to our kids, too! Remember they are trying to figure out who they are and who God wants them to be. We can do our best to be their safety, their stability, their authority and their boundary setter. But God is all of these things for them and more. And God sometimes speaks through our kids to teach us as well! Listen!
I believe it is my first calling as a Christ follower to listen to God first, and point my children to Him first. To listen to Christ first, to obey Christ first; to set this example first.
The truth must come from us. We must speak it all the time, even when it’s hard. We cannot give in and wish for the best. Love is action, and loving our kids, training each kid up in the way they should go is priority #1 in a world that is upside down.
